If large disturbances of soil are left bare and degraded, they become subjected to accelerated erosion and the threat of desertification as a result. Opencast mines of solid minerals are often abandoned after a time with no attempt at reclamation. These opencast mining activities cause soil disturbance and produce changes in the concentrations of toxic elements, dusts, biogenic gases and microclimatic gradients. These gradients in microclimate have implications that control plant water relations and energy balances. The loss of vegetated cover, microbes, topsoil and habitats, lead to a loss of biodiversity. This results in accelerated growth of monocultures and an invasion by weedy and exotic annuals. Currently there is regulations to address this issue, and restore the land back to its natural form.
PermaMatrix™ helps restore soil, creating a productive and functional soil-plant systems on these abandoned and degraded mine lands. The recuperation of these degraded ecosystems provide sustainable land use options and restoration/rehabilitation of these degraded ecosystems will control erosion, halt further degradation and preserve environmental quality.
